Ellery optimistic following Practice at Queensland

2/7/2004 19:13 (Press Release) - Following today’s first practice session for the Queensland 300, Steven Ellery is feeling positive about Sunday’s endurance race with the Super Cheap Auto driver using the today’s track time as a race run.

Ellery finished 14th in last year’s Queensland 300 and with this afternoon’s practice session not contributing to outright or championship standings Ellery used the 35 minutes of track time to ensure everything is spot on for Sunday’s single race.

“The last few rounds of the championship have consisted of a series of sprint races and now with us returning back to a single race, I wanted to ensure myself and the car where attuned to the changing format,” Ellery said.

“We completed this afternoon’s session as a race run and used the time to identify anything which may need attention prior to the race.

“Overall I was reasonably happy and know that with another practice session on our side prior to qualifying continued improvement can be made for not only qualifying but also the 280 kilometre race.”

Super Cheap Auto Racing Team Manager, John McLean states that while Ellery was outside the top 20 today the sole focus of tomorrow will be finding additional speed and achieving the best qualifying position possible.

“A test day last week identified additional areas within the car which needed attention and today provided the perfect opportunity to conduct such testing in a competitive environment,” McLean said.

“Tomorrow Super Cheap Auto Racing and Steven [Ellery] will focus on obtaining more speed which will complete the achievements made today and give the team and driver a competitive car on race day.”

With Ellery placed 10th overall at the round five of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship the Super Cheap Auto Racing driver is hoping for a qualifying performance which will provide him with the foundations for a good start for Sunday’s race.

“It would be great to make it into the shoot out as I haven’t been in one since the start of the year at Adelaide,” Ellery commented.

“The car was really competitive last round of the series at Perth and I think with another 35 minute practice session tomorrow we should be able squeeze the speed out of the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon to continue with the momentum started last round.”

Ellery is currently 29th in the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship.
