Last Year The Hunted, This Year The Hunter

29/6/2004 19:12 (Press Release) - PWR Racing is this year relishing a complete reversal of its 2003 form and approaches this weekend’s sixth round at Queensland Raceway with two round wins up its sleeve and a dire warning for its opponents - the best may still be to come.

Driver Jason Bright won the last round at Perth’s Barbagallo Raceway – becoming the only driver to win two rounds this year – and believes he and teammate Paul Weel are gathering momentum towards a strong finish to the season.

Last year, Bright streaked away to an early championship lead without ever winning a race, and was the man to beat until Round 8 when strategic difficulties within the fledging team saw him mown down to eventually finish the season fifth. Weel also began brilliantly, running as high as 4th in championship standings before fading to finish 13th.

The contrast with 2004 could hardly be starker, Bright and Weel’s respective 5th and 10th placings belying the competitiveness of the two PWR Racing cars. Bright retains legitimate championship hopes, trailing leader Marcos Ambrose by just 89 points.

Weel, who this year teamed up with former 888 Racing engineer Craig Spencer, said he believed the team was finding form as the season progresses. “We’re finding out more about the VY Commodore as the season goes on and getting better at being able to pick our set-ups,” he said.

“We’ve had a few setbacks but we expect to move forward from here because we’re more organised, more focused and we’re finally on a level playing field with everyone else.”

Bright agreed. “It was great at the time to lead the championship last year, but it ended up meaning very little,” he said. “I’ll be happy to lead for only round this year, as long as it is the last one, and we’re building nicely towards achieving that.

“I don’t think we can send a stronger signal about how serious we are than to win two of the past three rounds. I strongly believe the best is yet to come from this car and this team.”
