Bargwanna Excited About Proposed V8 Rule Changes

11/6/2004 11:10 (Press Release) - At the previous round of the V8 Supercar Championship in Darwin the Touring Car Entrants Group (TEGA) proposed a major overhaul of the Technical Regulations governing V8 Supercars, a move designed to put more emphasis on driver skill, ensure tighter racing and contain costs for all teams.

This proposed major overhaul has brought a smile to the face of Orrcon Racing driver Jason Bargwanna who believes that the rules could possibly be the best thing that has happened to the sport in years.

One of the major areas that will be affected is the reduced aerodynamic effectiveness of a V8 Supercar with the proposed new rules creating less down force and therefore making the cars a little tougher to drive.

“To the fan on the hill the cars will not look much different but they will certainly be different to drive with less down force than what we have become accustomed to, this can only be a good thing in my mind,” said Bargwanna.

“The reduced down force will create and promote great racing and more passing as it will even the field out and place more emphasis on the driver ability, in the process making the racing even more enjoyable to watch.”

Another area that will be greatly affected under the sweeping rule changes is the braking system with the implementation of a control brake rotor and pads.

“By implementing a controlled brake it will bring back the true racer to the sport, sure the technical challenge is making the car go fast by technical development is part of the team building process but in the end racing shouldn’t be about how much money is spent on development,” said Bargwanna.

“I believe it (the proposed changes) will create more braking duels with drivers trying to out brake each other rather than relying on whoever actually has the better brake caliper or pads for a pass.

“The crowd is there to see good racing and passing, it doesn’t matter if we do a one-minute ten second lap or a one-minute twelve second lap, they simply want to see a good race with lots of passing and action.”

The proposed changes also aim to ensure that the costs involved in operating a V8 Supercar team doesn’t continue to spiral upwards in years to come.

“Australian Motorsport is fighting hard against the other main stream sports for a budget to run a race team, there is only so many dollars than can go round in our economy,” said Bargwanna.

“It is vital that we ensure teams survive and are here for the long haul by containing the costs of the sport and 20 teams are here in ten years time, not just four to six of the bigger budget teams.

“Sure there will always be teams with bigger budgets but let them spend it on merchandise, bigger transporters and looking after their sponsors, not importing the latest trick bits to get a step ahead of the pack.”

Bargwanna will be joined by his Orrcon Racing team mate Mark Winterbottom in this weekend’s fifth round of the V8 Supercar Championship at West Australia’s Barbagallo Raceway. The pair are currently placed ninth and nineteenth in the Championship respectively.
