Ambrose Warms Up With A Bit Less Horsepower
11/6/2004 11:09 (Press Release) -
Defending V8 Supercar Champion Marcos Ambrose had his first look at the recently resurfaced Barbagallo Raceway near Perth today in a vehicle of a different kind.
Ambrose’s Pirtek Falcon was left in the Stone Brothers Racing transporter as Ford’s leading driver warmed-up for this weekend’s fifth round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series in a Red Bull Billycart.
Today’s event was part of the six-month build-up to the second Red Bull Billycart Grand Prix, which will be held in Melbourne on Sunday November 28.
“I think I will need a little more horsepower than this billycart can offer me if I am to win this weekend,” said Ambrose, who is personally sponsored by Red Bull.
“I have seen the footage from the first Red Bull GP a couple of years ago and it looked like a fantastic event.
“Some of the work that goes into these billycarts is just amazing and I am looking forward to being a part of this year’s event. With the prizes up for grabs I might even build one myself.”
After a hugely successful event in 2002, the Red Bull Billycart Grand Prix is returning to Melbourne, and is expected to attract more than 30,000 spectators.
Competitors will be judged on three criteria, CREATIVITY for the billycart (how outrageous and crazy your design is), SPEED (how quickly you can complete the course), and SHOWMANSHIP (the actual performance of the cart before, during and after the race - with spins, crashes and costumes of the competitors taken into consideration).
A score out of 50 will be given for each section of the race by celebrity judges.
The event will have a Formula One theme with the inclusion of pit lanes, VIP marquees, champagne, grid girls and more; however, this should not stifle the creativity of competitors when encouraged to design crazy original carts.
The 2002 event attract a giant pizza slice to a giant stiletto shoe driven by a drag queen to a shiny disco ball complete with sound system and flashing lights - if past entries are anything to go by - the event will be a unique, visual, spectacular.
A drivers licence is not required - just the passion and perseverance to see your project through to the end and what’s more, there will be some fantastic prizes up for grabs.
1st Prize: Strap yourself in as we fly you and your team to an exciting overseas race track for your very own F1 2-Seater Racing Experience*. 2nd Prize: Get revved up; you’re behind the wheel of a Formula Ford at an Australian race track. You and your team will be treated to an unforgettable day at the track drive day experience*. 3rd Prize: You’re playing with the big boys now. You and your team will take a Hot Lap in a V8 Supercar *. *Terms and Conditions apply.
Entry is free to competitors (anyone over the age of 14 can enter) and free to spectators.
Red Bull will ensure that all safety standards will be adhered to prior to racing. All competitors will be issued with a helmet and a technical safety check will be conducted on all billycarts before the race.
