Hidden Valley – Round 4, Qualifying

27/5/2004 16:24 (Anthony Goode) - Under clear blue skies, the Hidden Valley crowd watched as Jason Bright grabbed provisional pole during the qualifying run.

The PWR Performance Products driver scorched around Darwin’s premier motor sport venue setting a top time of 1:09.2821 seconds, after a mere two and a half minutes.

Despite the best efforts of all the drivers, no one was able to top the time in the remaining 17 minutes of the upper 50% session.

HRT's Mark Skaife came closest, falling short by 0.0482 of a second, securing him the second to last run for the shootout. Teammate Todd Kelly backed up his team leader by finishing one spot behind in 3rd on a 1:09.3771.

Results at Kmart racing were mixed, Eastern Creek round winner Rick Kelly sat in 6th, teammate Greg Murphy could do no better than 17th in car 51.

888 Engineering had only one car in the top ten after Paul Radisich was unable to produce a better time than 1:09.7629, which left him 13th; Max Wilson leading the team in 8th position with a 1:09.6207 lap time.

Larkham Orrcon Racing continued its strong form, with lead driver Bargwanna setting the 10th fastest time of 1:09.7297; while rookie teammate Mark Winterbottom finished a career high 14th.

The good pace shown by the two FPR Falcons in the preceding two practise sessions went missing at the wrong time, with Craig Lowndes just missing out on a berth in the top ten shootout, setting a time of 1:09.2590, which left him stranded in 11th.

He fared better than teammate Glenn Seton, however, who had an off road excursion on the way to an unfortunate 20th. "I locked the rears coming into turn four on my first lap and speared off" was Glenn’s' explanation.

John Bowe was disappointed to finish only 12th for Ozemail/Brad Jones Racing, making it the first time he did not take part in the shootout, while team boss Brad Jones was 18th.

Other drivers to make the shootout were, Steven Richards 4th, Marcos Ambrose 5th, Russell Ingall 7th and Simon Wills in 9th.
