HRT Saturday Hidden Valley Report

25/5/2004 20:00 (Press Release) - Hidden Valley (Darwin) – May 21st – 23rd, 2004

Saturday May 22nd – Practice #1/Qualifying/Shoot-Out/Race #1

The Holden Racing Team converted its solid practice form into 2nd and 3rd fastest in qualifying, then bettered that again in the Shoot Out for an all HRT front row; Mark Skaife taking his 33rd career pole position and, Todd Kelly alongside him.

In the Saturday afternoon 17-lap sprint race however, an almost-certain race win ended on the last corner of the last lap, when Skaife and Marcos Ambrose clashed. Ambrose limped across the line for 3rd and Skaife brought his steering-less VY Commodore home in 14th. Russell Ingall claimed the win, with HRT’s Todd Kelly avoiding the dramas to take 2nd and, set himself up for a strong run on Sunday.

Car #2/Chassis 049 – Mark Skaife:
Practice #2:
Laps completed – 18
Position – 7th
Fastest Lap – 1:09.96

Qualifying:
Laps completed – 8
Position – 2nd
Fastest lap – 1:09.33

Shoot Out:
Position – Pole
Fastest Lap – 1:09.11

Race #1:
Position – 14th
Fastest lap – 1:10.51

Mark Skaife:
“We did a great job in qualifying and the Shoot Out to get pole and, led the race until the incident with (Marcos) Ambrose on the last corner. In my career, I’ve never lost a race like that and it is a huge set back for the weekend.’

Car #22/Chassis #048 – Todd Kelly:
Practice #2:
Laps completed – 17
Position – 3rd
Fastest lap – 1:09.62

Qualifying:
Laps completed – 8
Position – 2nd
Fastest lap – 1:09.33

Shoot Out:
Position – 2nd
Fastest lap – 1:09.31

Race #1:
Position – 2nd
Fastest lap – 1:10.53

Todd Kelly:
“Mark and I were first and second initially, but I got caught wide on lap 7 and three other cars went past me. A couple of them gave me a hit on the way through, which bent the steering. I was able to keep with them though and after Brighty (Jason Bright) went off and then Mark and Marcos had their problems, I inherited 2nd. We had good car speed and, I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

Rob Starr – Team Manager:
There’s a bit of work to do tonight; we have to replace the steering rack on car #2 and, replace a steering arm on Todd’s car. It’s a bit disappointing to have had 2 cars on the front row and not win the race – especially when Mark looked likely up until the last corner. Todd’s 2nd was a good recovery though.”
