Ellery Goes Back To School With A Difference

21/5/2004 21:12 (Press Release) - It may have been almost two decades since Steven Ellery last went to school but today the Super Cheap Auto Racing Driver visited a classroom with a difference at the Katherine School of the Air.

Students in remote regions of Outback Australia had the opportunity to ask Ellery questions about the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon and his V8 Supercar career as part of their lessons using Interactive Distance Learning (IDL).

IDL is a learning environment which uses computers, two-way satellite communication and the internet to allow students and teachers to exchange audio and visual information in real time.

Ellery was amazed at the technology contained within the IDL Classroom and believes the program opens up a whole new world to the students.

“In today’s world it is easy to take advantage of the benefits technology has made to our lives. But after speaking with the students of the Katherine School of the Air you really do appreciate things like the internet,” Ellery said.

“IDL opens a whole new world up to the children of remote communities and I was glad to share with them some of my experiences and knowledge which I have obtained over the past few years of V8 Supercar Racing.

“We often take face to face communication for granted, but to be able to speak directly to the children and answer their questions as they listened was a great experience.”

Ellery said the questions the students asked him were a reflection of their lifestyle and what it means to live in Outback Australia.

“When you think about, these kids have been helping on the farm and know a lot about cars due to their environment. They had some really good questions and I was only too happy to assist their learning process,” Ellery commented.

“There were a few times when I had to ask myself how old are these kids, because there questions were so advanced.

“The visit certainly opened my eyes, and I was glad to share something with the students at Katherine School of the Air which goes beyond what they see on television or read in the media.”

This weekend Ellery will compete in the fourth round of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship at Hidden Valley Motorsport Complex in Darwin.

Ellery was 22nd in today’s practice session for the Round Four of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship.
