2004 V8 SUPERCAR CHAMPIONSHIP – Rnd 4
Hidden Valley (Darwin) – May 21st – 23rd, 2004
Friday May 21st – Practice #1
The Holden Racing Team’s Todd Kelly is a happy V8 Supercar driver this afternoon, after recording the quickest time in practice #1 for this weekend’s 4th round of the Championship at Darwin’s Hidden Valley circuit. Kelly headed defending champ Marcos Ambrose and the junior Kelly (Rick) with Craig Lowndes and Jason Bright rounding out the top 5.
Recent (and unexpected) rain in Darwin has washed the track clean so, times are almost a second slower than the equivalent session at last year’s event.
Car #2:
Practice #1:
Laps completed – 17
Position – 10th
Fastest Lap – 1min: 10.65 seconds
Mark Skaife:
“We chose not to put on fresh tyres and, concentrated instead on the car’s race set-up. A 10.6 on old tyres – against say Marcos’ (Ambrose) 10.3, isn’t too bad. The grip level is down quite a bit on last year, but that should improve if it stays dry.”
Car #22:
Practice #1:
Laps completed – 17
Position – First
Fastest Lap – 1:10.05 seconds
Todd Kelly:
“We’ve been trying a few new things on the car so in the early part of the session, we were well down the time sheets. When we were happy with the balance, we put on the fresher tyres and put down a couple of quick ones so, we got a result.”
Rob Starr – Team Manager:
“With everyone of tyres of varying quality, it’s a bit hard to judge just where we are at the moment, especially with the reduced grip level from last year. Mark and Todd’s base set up is good but I’m not sure where we will be speed-wise until after qualifying.”
