Kelly Says Close Competition Making V8 Supercars The 'Never, Never Know' Series
21/5/2004 20:05 (Press Release) -
Kmart Racing star Rick Kelly says it is a case of “you never, never know” as the V8 Supercars hit the top end at this weekend’s fourth round of the 2004 series, being held at Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin.
With the series producing three different winners in the first three rounds, including a win for himself at Eastern Creek last month, Kelly says the series has become so competitive that it’s now virtually unpredictable.
“It’s about right that the Northern Territory’s slogan is ‘you never, never know if you never, never go’ cause I’ve got no idea what’s going to happen at Hidden Valley this weekend, but I’m looking forward to going there to find out where we stand,” Kelly said.
“With everyone pushing so hard and with so many fast cars out there the series is becoming too hard to predict and you can’t really go by past results. I haven’t had much luck in Darwin in the past, but on combined points Kmart Racing is the leading team in the championship and doing a great job this year, so we’re confident of turning that around.”
Kelly says predicting this weekend’s results is made more difficult with the knowledge this is the first time the Kmart team has raced its pair of VY Commodores at the circuit, he and his Bathurst-winning co-driver and team-mate, Greg Murphy, using a pair of older VX Commodores during its last visit to Darwin.
“There is still a lot to learn about the new cars, but we made progress with them in New Zealand and we are hoping those improvements carry over to Hidden Valley – we just won’t know until we pull the cars out of the trailer and get them on the track,” he said.
After three of 13 rounds in the championship, Kelly is currently fourth in points, just one place behind Murphy, Marcos Ambrose and fellow Holden driver Steven Richards placed one, two respectively.
Darwin’s V8 Supercar fans will be able meet Kelly and Murphy when they make an appearance at Kmart’s Casuarina Square store in Casuarina at 1.30pm this Thursday, 20 May.
Network Ten will televise two-and-a-half hours of live coverage from Darwin, beginning at 2.30pm Sunday afternoon. Check your local guides for full details.
