Holden's Murphy Set To Roar Like The Lions
21/5/2004 20:03 (Press Release) -
Holden V8 Supercar star Greg Murphy is ready to tackle the top end’s most fearsome crocodiles after undergoing intensive training ahead of this weekend’s fourth round of the V8 Supercar Series.
In preparation for the race being held at Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin, Murphy today went face-to-face with the lions at the new Lions on the Edge exhibit at Werribee Open Range Zoo near Melbourne.
“It was a little scary at first, but once you can look a lion in the eyes then you’re ready for just about anything, I reckon,” said Murphy, driver of the #51 Kmart Racing Commodore.
The three-time Bathurst 1000 winner was amazed at how close visitors to the zoo can get to the lions, two jumping atop the bonnet of the vehicle which plays a central role in the exhibit while he was at the wheel.
“Talk about being intimidated, I hope my Kmart Commodore is as intimidating to the opposition as the lions were to me when they first jumped on the vehicle,” he said.
“It is an incredible exhibit, well worth the experience.”
The $4 million exhibit, sponsored by Holden and the Victorian government, showcases the lions and takes visitors on a 'discovery' walking trail, finishing up with close-up views of the zoo’s pride of lions in Werribee's dramatic savannah landscape. It opened in January.
