Ellery Returns To Where It All Began
21/5/2004 19:51 (Press Release) -
With memories of success at Darwin, Super Cheap Auto Racing will return to the circuit which started their run to endurance success in 2003 with Steven Ellery out to rekindle his competitiveness in this year’s V8 Supercar Championship.
Last year’s visit to the Northern Territory saw Ellery eighth outright with the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon just missing the top ten shoot out.
At round four of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship at Hidden Valley Raceway from 21 – 23 May, Ellery is hoping to produce a result which is a mirror image of his performance last year.
“Super Cheap Auto Racing’s success at Hidden Valley last year can be attributed to a number of factors. It was one of our first races with current engine builder, Craig Hasted and we were starting to find our feet with the BA,” Ellery said.
“It was the start of our run forward to podiums at Sandown and Bathurst and where Super Cheap Auto Racing started to find better car setup and engine performance.”
At New Zealand Ellery shook the jinx which had followed him through the first two rounds of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship with the Super Cheap Auto Racing Driver recording his first points of the year.
With the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon arriving back in Australia almost two weeks after the international event, Ellery used the time delay to work with his team and make adjustments to the #31 Falcon.
“Since Pukekohe [New Zealand] we have actually had time to sit down and take a good look at the car and make a few adjustments to the suspension which should provide me with better handling at Darwin,” Ellery commented.
“We’ve also considered different setups for Darwin which should help the rear tyres deal with the heat.
“With a new engineer on board and a couple of crashes in the opening rounds of the series, we are hoping to complete our next test day after Darwin. We’ve only had one test day this year and that was before the Grand Prix at the start of March.”
Ellery will be aiming for the best qualifying position possible to assist him during Saturday’s 17 lap sprint race.
“The sprint races are definitely hard work and where you qualify is more times than not where you finish. While I prefer the longer races, I am looking forward to a format which is different to what we normally race,” Ellery stated.
“This year the landscape within the V8 Supercar Championship has changed and there has been a noticeable step up in competition, which should provide V8 fans up there in the top end with some great racing.”
