Round 3 PlaceMakers NZ V8 International - Part 7 Race 2

2/5/2004 12:51 (Mark Jones) - Jason Bright outdragged Race 1 winner Marcus Ambrose to the first turn and went on the lead every lap to win Race 2 at the PlaceMakers NZ V8 International.

The PWR Performance Products Holden lead driver was challenged late in the race by four time defending champion at Pukekohe Park, Greg Murphy, but held on to take victory by eight tenths of a second.

None of the top five positions changed after the first lap was completed, with Ambrose taking third, some seven seconds behind Murphy, and three seconds ahead of Murphy's Kmart Racing Team team mate, Rick Kelly.

Series leader Castrol Perkins Motorsport lead deriver, Steven Richards finished in fifth position, which was just one position too few to defend that championship lead. Richards now sits on 470 points, two behind Ambrose.

Max Wilson held sixth position early until striking trouble, letting Paul Weel into the position which he held to the flag.

Light rain fell intermitently during the race, leading to a littany of incidents throughout the race, including a brief safety car period on lap 12, but conditions did allow lap times to drop down to within a couple of seconds of practice times.

Mark Skaife was the first three retirements after broken suspension claimed the lead Holden Racing Team Commodore after just nine laps. Orrcon Racing's Jason Bargwanna and Team Dynamiks Dale Brede also failed to greet the chequered flag.
