Tony Evangelou Delivers The Goods
27/4/2004 2:48 (Press Release) -
Tony Evangelou showed that the up-and-coming Dexion Racing Team is a genuine competitive force with demonstrated top-ten capability. Playing catch-up due to the absence of any test days (arising from the theft of the team's transporter) Evangelou put the Dexion Racing Falcon in a respectable 13th grid position for the commencement of Race One.
With ever-increasing pace Evangelou climbed into the top ten on lap 10 and pushed upwards to a creditable 8th by the end of the race which was lengthened from 14 to 16 laps due to two Safety Car incidents.
Race Two was blighted when the Dexion Racing Falcon was contacted causing sufficient damage to the steering to see withdrawal at the end of the opening lap.
Commencing the final race from close to the rear of field Evangelou again showed good form. Climbing to 11th by lap 12 the distinctive red and white Dexion Racing Falcon suffered fuel surge requiring a return to the pits.
With no apparent problem, but with the loss of two laps, Evangelou returned to the race untroubled by the problem again until the last lap, and took an undeserving 20th place.
Tony Evangelou: "The car was terrible when we put it on the track on Saturday morning for the initial Practice Sessions. The lack of a test day put us behind the eight ball initially so to be the 13th fastest in Qualifying with an improvement in lap times of two and a half seconds was gratifying.
"The first race went really well and our best lap time was within half a second of all but two cars ahead of us: 8th was an excellent result in a race that was packed with incidents.
"Race Two was a disappointing write off and had a broader impact because our starting position for the final race was dramatically affected. A half-decent Race Two result would have put us somewhere in the top ten grid positions for Race Three. Nonetheless we had made good progress to reach 11th until a fuel surge problem put a halt on things.
"Despite finishing in 20th we had the ninth quickest lap time of all the cars that finished the race showing that our race pace was competitive enough for us to have been knocking on the door of the top six by the end of the weekend."
