Youlden Back On Top Of Championship
19/4/2004 14:11 (Press Release) -
Super Cheap Auto Racing Driver, Luke Youlden is back on top of the point score for the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship after being declared runner up at round three of the series at Winton Motor Raceway today.
Youlden and Super Cheap Auto Racing recorded their first ever race win at Winton in the final this afternoon after finishing second and 16th in the races prior.
Youlden was second overall with local driver, Andrew Jones taking the round victory.
Youlden stoked with not only the race win but the overall position of the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon in the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship.
“To be leading the championship once again is fantastic. I didn’t get the result I was looking for at Adelaide and vowed to work a little bit harder this weekend and take back the series lead,” an excited Youlden said.
“Yesterday the Super Cheap Auto Racing crew perfected the car and today it was on fire. To start the first race from sixth and finish second is a testament to how tuned in the car really is.”
It is the second time Youlden has held the top spot in the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship with the 26 year old equalling the points recorded by early championship leader Alan Gurr at the first round of the series at Wakefield Park.
Youlden is now 34 points clear of Matthew White who held the series lead prior to the opening of this weekend’s racing at Winton in north eastern Victoria.
“To have a little bit of a buffer between myself and Matthew as we enter the final three rounds of the championship is a good position to be in. I now have to focus on maintaining the lead and not making any costly mistakes,” Youlden commented.
“After having a mediocre round at Adelaide and then to come out on top this weekend silences a few of the critics who questioned if Super Cheap Auto Racing were really championship contenders.
“I am certainly not in the championship to be second best and this weekend’s performance proves it.”
Super Cheap Auto Racing Team Manager, John McLean was singing his praises for Youlden this afternoon after his performance throughout the round.
“All I can say is that Luke did a fantastic job this weekend from the moment we hit the track for practice to taking the chequered flag in the final race,” McLean stated.
“Today Luke also drove with the maturity of a champion and was rewarded with a race win and position on the podium.”
The fourth round of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship is at Eastern Creek in Western Sydney on the 29 – 30 May 2004.
