Youlden Makes Critical Changes For Tomorrow’s Races
19/4/2004 13:52 (Press Release) -
Luke Youlden will open round three of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship with an improved Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon which see him advance from sixth position during tomorrow’s three races at Winton Motor Raceway.
Youlden and the three cars ahead of him on the timesheets for the session recorded almost identical times with the Super Cheap Auto Racing Driver making suspension changes during practice which resulted in a faster, controlled V8 Supercar this afternoon.
“Sixth is a good position to start tomorrow’s race, but in some ways it is a little disappointing. If the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon had of gone just nine hundredths of a second quicker we could have halved our position to third,” Youlden said.
“Our tyre strategy for qualifying did not work in our favour but it is a matter of learning from the mistake and making sure everything counts tomorrow.”
Youlden is expecting tomorrow’s three races will see him finish higher than his qualifying position of sixth with Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon going through some dramatic improvements today.
“During the first practice session the car was difficult to drive. Since then we have changed the front spring configuration and as a result the car has gone half a second quicker this afternoon,” Youlden stated.
“Half a second is a significant gain and will come in extremely handy tomorrow especially during the reverse grid race.
“The Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon is more predictable then it was this morning and it certainly provides me with more confidence to push the boundaries throughout the races tomorrow.
“The benefit in making the changes today and proving them successful will mean tomorrow I can go on track with a stronger Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon and record more points for my championship assault.”
Super Cheap Auto Racing Team Manager, John McLean points out that today’s qualifying session provided glimpses of Youlden’s improvement since the same round of the series in 2003.
“Today Luke was 1.1 seconds quicker around Winton than last year. It displays how much he and Super Cheap Auto Racing have improved in under 12 months,” McLean concluded.
“Luke’s time was only half a second slower than Marcos Ambrose’s qualifying time which saw him on pole in the main series at Winton last year.”
“The fast times today can be attributed to the constantly cool and overcast conditions, if the weather remains the same tomorrow there is no reason why Luke cannot improve on his position today.”
