Jones On Top At Winton

19/4/2004 13:34 (Press Release) - Team BOC’s Andrew Jones has dominated today’s practice and qualifying during round 3 of the Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship at Winton Motor Raceway in North East Victoria by topping the times in both practice sessions and securing pole position for tomorrow’s opening race.

Jones seemed unstoppable during the day as he piloted his BOC Falcon to the peak of the times sheets. His qualifying time of 1:23:20 was not only half a second quicker than his nearest competitor but also represents the young gun’s fastest ever time around the Winton circuit.

“We have had a good day. My BOC Falcon was great from the moment that we went out this morning and we were able to build on things from there,” said Andrew Jones.

“Our only concern is that I would like to get a little more front grip for the car but looking at our times, it isn’t too much to worry about.”

When questioned on his domination of all three sessions today, Jones said – “The real benefit from having our BOC Falcon going so well in this morning’s practice sessions is knowing we already have a good car setup, particularly on old tyres.”

“For tomorrow’s races we will go back to the same setup we used in the practice, which means that we don’t have to muck around experimenting to get things sorted out,” he added.

For Andrew Jones, Winton Raceway is his home circuit with his team being based in nearby Albury and also being his official test circuit. His record at Winton is impressive with it being the venue for his first V8 Supercar round win in 2003 but a fact that the talented young driver plays down.

“It was great winning in front of a hometown crowd last year and it’s something that I would dearly love to do again but last year’s result is the last thing on my mind at the moment. I just want to concentrate on making the most of the car speed we have during tomorrow’s races and get a good result, so I can get back into championship contention.”

“I want to and need to be consistent, get the front and let the others try and chase me. If we can do that, well it could be a successful day,” Jones concluded.

Tomorrow’s race schedule includes three races for the Konica Minolta V8 Supercar – a 14 lap opening race, a 14 lap reversed grid race and then a 24 lapper to conclude.
