Tony Evangelou Set To Continue Impressive Form
19/4/2004 13:01 (Press Release) -
Fresh from an impressive debut at the Clipsal 500 event Tony Evangelou and the Dexion Racing Team are buoyant about their prospects at this weekend's Round Three at Winton Motor Raceway, and for good reason. The team's 7th overall at the previous Round shows that they can "punch above their weight" against some of the nation's top Level 1 V8 Supercar Championship teams that field entries in the hotly contested Konica Minolta
V8 Supercar Series.
Wheeling out their AU Falcon for only its second time the Dexion Racing Team believes it can replicate the success of Adelaide and are squarely aiming at a top-six result, with good reason as Tony Evangelou explained, "Having completed the rebuild of the Dexion Racing Falcon only one week prior to its debut we have since gone over it thoroughly and made some enhancements to the way the steering geometry is set-up.
"The car proved itself reliable at Adelaide although it laboured with a misfire in Race Two which we have now eliminated. We certainly attracted some attention which paid dividends," he said in reference to the acquisition of two more sponsors, "One Eleven Tool Storage Systems and Wurth Fasteners are now on-board for the remainder of the season which is great.
On this weekend Evangelou added, "Our preparation plans were thrown into disarray when our team prime mover was stolen and burnt to the ground the day before our scheduled test day forcing it to be cancelled. I am very grateful to Clive Henderson's Raztrans for lending us a rig in the interim.
"Winton is a track that I am very familiar with. I generally prefer the faster tracks but Winton's mixture of tight left and right corners holds its own challenges, its not an easy track to set your car up for and if you are even a little off the mark you can drop 15 grid positions", but despite under-playing his hand Evangelou has good form at this picturesque circuit as demonstrated with his name in the books for holding the lap record in the Saloon Car Series, the highly competitive "formula series" for identical Commodores and Falcons.
The team will field it's entry in the Saloon Car Series this weekend with Team Manager David Page behind the wheel of an identically-liveried Falcon, as he explained, "Our race programme is to provide extra exposure for our sponsors with our entry in the Saloon Car Series. With full fields of 40 cars and my broader team responsibilities we don't expect to shake the earth but as always we will be very competitive, and importantly, double the time that our sponsors' names are in front of the public.
"We had to put forward a convincing argument to CAMS (the Confederation of Australian Motorsport, the sport's controlling body) for dispensation to use a three-digit race number, #300, the same as we have for the Dexion Racing V8 Supercar: but its attention to detail like this that is important to us."
Winton bills itself as the "nation's action track", packing twelve corners into its three kilometres length it is predominately comprised of tight corners plus a fast main straight. Renowned for close hard racing Winton always serves up more than its fair share of panel-rubbing and off-track excursions.
