Smiths Trucks Aiming For Top Six
19/4/2004 12:54 (Press Release) -
The Smith's Trucks Racing Team has its sights set on a result at Winton this weekend to get their championship back on track, a track at which they previously have demonstrated race-winning form. Leading the championship after Round One the Ballarat-based squad is looking to reverse their fortunes from the previous Round at the Adelaide street circuit where both cars received damage.
Fielding one of its two Commodores this weekend, the #72 Smith's Trucks Commodore, will be helmed by Lee Holdsworth. The twenty one year old, still in the early stages of his V8 Supercar career, is eager to show the potential he produced in Round One at Wakefield Park (Goulburn, NSW) where he finished the final race in 6th after Qualifying in 17th: a performance that put him in 6th championship position.
Lee Holdsworth: "I'm not a stranger to Winton having raced there the past two years in the Commodore Cup with a 3rd overall last year and 4th the year before. I love the track! Its layout is fairly flowing even though there are some stop/go corners.
"You're always busy doing something and hopefully this weekend this will mean harassing the leaders. I believe we are capable of a top five result but the first mission is to keep the car tidy and out of harm's way as this place has a reputation for incidents."
Team Manager Ryan McLeod continued, "The team has put in a big effort of over 300 man hours to get us out on the track this weekend and I believe Lee will continue his strong form. The #70 Smith's Trucks Commodore is under-going an upgrade to VY Commodore specification which is essentially a full replacement chassis, it will re-appear in October for the Bob Jane T-Marts Bathurst 1000."
A total of 30 cars are entered. One of the tightest circuits in the series, at three kilometres in length and with 12 corners, there are few moments for drivers to relax at Winton.
Its average speed of around 130km/h is the lowest of all tracks in the series and plenty of bumper-to-bumper action is guaranteed especially in the reverse grid format for the start of Race Two that reverses the finishing order for Race One. All three races are held on Sunday preceded by two Practice Sessions and a Qualifying Session on Saturday.
