Jones States - I'm Still Out To Win The Championship
14/4/2004 22:57 (Press Release) -
Team BOC’s Andrew Jones has delivered a strong message to his fans and competitors ahead of round 3 of the Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship at Winton Motor Raceway this weekend, stating that he is still totally focussed on winning the title this year and will do whatever possible to achieve the goal.
“Although I’m sitting in 12th position in the standings at the moment, it’s still well and truly feasible for me to win the championship from where I am. I’m only 128 points behind the leader and there’s 166 points for a round win, so with a good result this weekend, we can really close the gap,” said Jones.
With just three rounds remaining to conclude the 2004 series, Jones admits the task-at-hand will be a tough one - “It’s not going to be easy. There are some very good drivers in the Konica Minolta Championship who wont give anything away. It will basically mean that I will have to win as many of the races in the remaining 3 rounds as possible and not have any more DNF’s [did-not-finish].”
Jones, who from the five races completed so far in 2004, has finished 1st, 2nd and 4th but has been heavily affected by two did-not-finish results.
“We’ve proven that the Team BOC Falcon has the speed to win races but the DNF’s have really costed us dearly. We’ve been over the car with a fine tooth comb since Adelaide to make sure that we don’t have the same reliability problems,” Jones added.
Jones has every right to feel increased confidence going into the Winton round with the circuit being the scene for his first ever round win in 2003. The Albury based young gun dominated last years fixture, taking two race wins and 5th in the reversed grid affair.
“Winton is our home track, not only for testing but being born and bred in Albury, it’s also where our local fans get their chance to watch motorsport. It was a huge thrill to win the round there last year and it would be fantastic to repeat that again year but we’ll just have to see how we go,” Jones concluded.
Winton Motor Raceway is located on the Hume Highway, 1 hour south of Albury/Wodonga. Round 3 of the 2004 Konica Minolta Championship kicks off an Saturday 17th April, with all three races on Sunday 18th.
