Terrible Weekend Continues For Ellery
14/4/2004 21:55 (Press Release) -
A bad weekend got worse for Steven Ellery when his Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon speared into a concrete barrier at high speeds at round two of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship at Eastern Creek today.
The accident occurred at the turn one of the Eastern Creek circuit when the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon stepped out on Ellery as he approached the fast corner.
A wet track was one factor in the accident with soaking rain falling before and throughout the event forcing the 300 kilometre race to begin with a rolling start under the direction of the Safety Car.
While Ellery was physically unhurt as a result of the accident, it is a hard blow to Super Cheap Auto Racing with the team yet to secure their first championship points of the year, after a disastrous round at Adelaide a fortnight ago.
“It was certainly a hard hit and I am thankful I did not get hurt,” Ellery said, “the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon hit the concrete barrier so hard it moved back.”
“It is a major disappointment for Super Cheap Auto Racing. After two rounds of the championship, we unfortunately have no points which is not the position I or the team wanted to be in so early in the year.
“The thing which I think is the biggest shame is that we haven’t had the opportunity to go into a hard race against the big boys and prove that we have a highly competitive race car under our belt.”
The Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon will be repaired under a tight schedule with a number of the team personnel attending round three of the 2004 Konica Minolta Championship in two weeks time.
“I am fortunate that the crew at Super Cheap Auto Racing are one of the hardest working in the category and a big effort by them over the next few weeks will ensure the #31 Falcon is ready for the next round.”
The eventual winner of the race at Eastern Creek was Rick Kelly after the race was red flagged due to excessive rain on track before 77 laps were completed.
