Bowe Back On Pace
4/4/2004 8:32 (Press Release) -
John Bowe has once again managed to squeeze the potential out of his OzEmail Falcon in today’s opening practice session of round 2 of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway, setting the 5th fastest time of the day.
After the setback during the last race at the Clipsal 500 just a fortnight ago, it was an upbeat Bowe that described today’s efforts –
“I’ve got a car that has fantastic brakes and a reasonably good set up. The feel of it [my OzEmail Falcon], especially the engine, was definitely better than last year. All in all, it was a enjoyable car to drive.”
When questioned on the areas his OzEmail Falcon needed improving, Bowe added – “The extra power that we seem to have is wasted because I cant get the best entry speed onto the straight. We need to fix the ‘power down’ out of the corners but other than that, I’m pretty happy.”
Bowe’s fifth position today was identical to that of his last year’s practice result. In 2003, his speed continued into qualifying where he positioned his OzEmail Falcon on the third row of the grid. A penalty for a jump start and a sticking accelerator in the final stages of the race, put an end to any productive result.
A frustrated Brad Jones has battled through the practice session with a car that did not respond to any of the changes made by him and his engineering team, leaving the nine times Australian champ scratching his head.
We tried a number of things but none of them worked. Every time that we thought we had the major fix to the problem, we would go back onto the track with a car that was worse,” said Jones.
“We are all a little mystified at what we can do to get a better set up but we will spend tonight having a look at the telemetry from John’s [Bowe] car and see if we can get some inspirations from that.”
Jones’ time of 1:33:27 saw him placed in 22nd position.
