WPS Racing Responds To Industry Speculation
4/4/2004 8:28 (Press Release) -
Speculation in motorsport circles that emerging V8 Supercar team WPS Racing has negotiated a deal with leading engine builder Cragar Performance is incorrect.
Following a deal announced yesterday in which WPS Racing confirmed it had engaged renowned engineer Ian Walburn, speculation mounted that WPS Racing had struck a similar deal with Craig Hasted’s Cragar outfit.
WPS Racing team owner Craig Gore said today that there was no deal with Cragar.
“I’ve heard the speculation and I can categorically confirm that WPS Racing has no deal with Cragar,” said Gore.
“What we have done is engaged Ian Walburn, who is one of the country’s most respected motorsport engineers, and there seems to be some sort of confusion that this extends to Cragar.
“It does not. We have negotiated a deal with Ian and nobody else.
“We are still building WPS Racing and look forward to some further announcements in the future, but I am keen to reiterate that we have not signed Cragar to our team.”
WPS Racing is continuing its build up to the second round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Eastern Creek this weekend.
Ian Walburn has taken over the engineering of the team’s Ford Falcon, which will be driven this weekend by David Besnard.
Besnard finished the first round in 13th position on the championship table and, with the team continuing to establish itself after coming together just seven weeks ago, is looking to break into the top 10.
Mark Noske, the second of the drivers signed to WPS Racing, will sit out round two while the team continues to negotiate over the purchase of a second license.
WPS Racing needs the additional license before it is permitted to field two cars in the championship.
