Kmart Racing's Test Track Move Should Pay Dividends At Fast And Flowing Eastern Creek

4/4/2004 8:25 (Press Release) - Reigning Bathurst Champions, Greg Murphy and Rick Kelly believe Kmart Racing ’s decision to move its testing program to the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit this season will pay dividends during this weekend’s V8 Supercar Series round at Eastern Creek.

The Kmart team made the switch from the tight and twisting Winton circuit to the fast and flowing Phillip Island track – which has similar characteristics to the 3.93km Eastern Creek circuit – in an effort to better develop its VY Commodores for this year’s 13-round championship.

Murphy and the Kmart team struggled at last season’s title decider, the Main Event, also held at Eastern Creek – the venue the site of two championship rounds.

“We figured the move to Phillip Island would be good for our program and I believe there’s no doubt the benefit of the two days testing we’ve already done there this year will show this weekend,” Murphy said.

“The two circuits are similar and we’ve made a lot of progress in the time we’ve had down at the island so we’re confident of a significant improvement in our performance at Eastern Creek over last December – I suppose we just won’t know how much until we actually get there.”

Kelly said the fact the team are also using two VY Commodores at Eastern Creek this time around will also be beneficial to Kmart Racing’s performance.

“When we were last at Eastern Creek in December I still had the older VX, so that made things more difficult for all of us. But Murph and I are running identical cars this time around with the same set-ups, so that’s positive to start with.” Kelly said.

“Our testing has been great and the feedback we’ve been able to give has been along the same lines, so I think we can be competitive this weekend. It will be tough, the Stone Brothers are obviously the benchmark team there, but we’re confident and we’ll work on doing the best job we can.”

Coverage of the Eastern Creek round of the V8 Supercar Series begins at 2.30pm Sunday, the telecast preceded by a one-hour edition of the RPM Motorsport magazine program.
