Tasman Holds High Hopes For Its 'Home' Track
4/4/2004 8:24 (Press Release) -
Tasman Motorsport plans to exploit a significant “home-ground” advantage at this weekend’s second round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Sydney’s Eastern Creek.
As the only Sydney-based team in the series, Tasman tested last year – under its former identity as the Lansvale Racing Team – at Eastern Creek and holds a significant bank of data for the notoriously temperature-sensitive track.
“We’ve got an advantage there, clearly,” driver Jason Richards said this week. “It’s now up to us to use it and historically this team has usually performed well there.
“Of course, there are differences between the way the car was set up for another driver last year and the way I like to have the car set up, so not every element of data is going to be immediately transferable.
“We’ll kick off our weekend with a set-up based around what was used there last year, with a few small changes to suit my driving style. That’s what we did at Clipsal, and some development over the course of the weekend gave us a really fast car for the races.”
Richards said he rated Eastern Creek as one of his favourite circuits to drive. “I always enjoy it, and I’ve had some pretty reasonable results there,” he said.
“It has a nice blend of corners, with high-speed sweepers and tight turns. There’s not much opportunity for passing, even over a 300km race, so qualifying well is going to be extremely important.
“We definitely want to do well in front of our home crowd and build on what we achieved in Race 2 at Clipsal (finished 8th after starting from 24th). I certainly think we can finish inside the top 10 again, no question.
“But we won’t lose sight of the fact that finishing the race remains the most important priority, and we won’t do anything to jeopardise that.”
