Besnard Gets Nod For Eastern Creek
4/4/2004 8:17 (Press Release) -
David Besnard will pilot the WPS Racing Ford Falcon in the second round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Eastern Creek on the weekend. Besnard has got the nod ahead of co-team driver Mark Noske after turning in a stunning season-opening performance in the first round in Adelaide earlier this month.
Team owner Craig Gore said the decision to go with Besnard at Eastern Creek was also a strategic move designed to ensure the team consolidates its position in the series ratings.
“Several races this year have restricted fields determined by where your drivers are placed on the points table so we have to be conscious of that until the team gets its second license,” said Gore.
“Picking a driver for Eastern Creek was an extremely difficult decision for the team and I feel for Mark Noske because he is showing such great enthusiasm and promise.
“Whatever way we went was going to be a tough call for one of our drivers but Mark will take it in his stride and bounce back when given the opportunity.”
WPS Racing is continuing negotiations to purchase a second license that will allow it to field two cars in the championship series.
Gore said he was hopeful of securing the license soon but he could give no indication when he would have both cars on the track.
“It is difficult for our drivers at the moment but, on the bright side, we have turned in a brilliant first round,” said Gore.
“We now have a very sound understanding of our first car and all of the advances we have made will be included in our second car when it gets to the track.”
Besnard said he was grateful to earn the drive at Eastern Creek and was confident that further work on car since the team’s series debut in Adelaide would ensure another competitive performance.
“Obviously it is great news for me that I’m driving at Eastern Creek and I’m looking to consolidate my position on the points table,” said Besnard.
“The way the team performed at Adelaide gives me confidence that we can break into the top 10, which would be a remarkable effort for a team put together just seven weeks ago.
“On the downside, I really feel for Mark Noske who is pulling his hair out waiting to get back into the car.
“It was a tough call for Craig (Gore) but he has made the decision and now we will pull together as a team and work towards improving further on our first round performance.”
