Steve Johnson Star Attraction at SX Nationals
4/4/2004 8:11 (Press Release) -
Shell Helix Racing' s Steve Johnson was the centre of attention at round nine of the Supercross Nationals held in Brisbane over the weekend.
Johnson was invited to participate in the Yamaha Naughty Nineties Celebrity race with Craig Dack, holder of twelve national motocross titles, Mark Willis, 2003 Australian Motocross Champion, Greg Martin, ex Wallaby and Triple M Brisbane radio announcer and Erin Normoily, part of the Australian Girls Motocross team.
The celebrity race involved three laps of the full Supercross track at Brisbane's Entertainment Centre on Yamaha TT R 90 motorbikes.
"I had a ripper of a time," Steve Johnson said.
"It was a lot of fun competing against people that have been so successful in motocross.
"It was also pretty cool to do the entire circuit; we got to go over everything, even though on little TT R 90's we didn't get much air."
Johnson made it clear that his aim on the night was to at least beat long time friend and Team Yamaha owner Craig Dack.
"I've had a really close association with Craig (Dack) and Yamaha for a while now so it was great to be asked to compete in the Supercross Nationals celebrity race," Johnson said.
"I couldn't wait to get there and push Craig a bit. But having said that he's a legend of motorcycling so I knew that he didn't really want to be beaten by a simple V8 driver.
"I tried to handicap him a bit; I thought of taking a front peg off his bike or filling his pockets with lead but he was keeping a close eye on me.
"In the end Craig came off his bike. It was an accident but he reckons I fixed him up. Either way, I beat him and that's all that matters.
"I have bragging rights, and somehow I think that I'll always deny him the rematch, that way I'm the reigning champ.
"But we had a lot fun out there on Saturday night; none of us took it too seriously, it was great."
