WPS Racing On The Road To Repair
26/3/2004 20:24 (Press Release) -
WPS Racing is paying the price for a helter skelter season opening race in the V8 Supercar Championship Series. Repair work on the WPS Racing car driven by David Besnard in the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide last weekend has topped about $45,000.
The damage was sustained when Besnard was shunted from behind and speared into a wall late in the second and final race of the series opener.
The incident, with Holden’s Mark Skaife, forced Besnard to return to the pits for urgent attention to the car and lost valuable time on the race leaders.
The crash caused severe damage to the rear and side of Besnard car but, after several minutes in the pits, he returned to the track to complete an outstanding series debut for WPS Racing.
WPS Racing, with Besnard in control, finished the weekend in 12th position on the V8 Supercar Championship Series table.
Team owner Craig Gore said repair work was under way on the car ahead of the second round at Eastern Creek next weekend.
“It has about $45,000 of damage but we’ll knock it back into shape and we’ll be competitive in Sydney,” said Gore.
“After the incident in Adelaide we filed a complaint to race officials but no action was taken.
“So we have now set our sights on Sydney and we are going into the round with absolute confidence after what can only be described as an incredible series debut.”
Besnard piloted the WPS Ford Falcon for the first time in a race since the team was formed in February of this year.
Previously, he had only completed several test laps in the car.
Fellow team driver Mark Noske was behind the wheel of the same car in the V8 Supercar support race at the Melbourne Formula One grand prix.
It is anticipated that both Noske and Besnard will share driving duties for WPS Racing until the team can secure a second license.
“We need the second license to allow us field two cars,” said Gore.
“Until then we focusing all of our attention on getting our first car functioning to peak capacity.
“Adelaide proved that we are on the right track and all credit goes to the team who pulled this together in just six weeks.”
