Ellery Victim Of Adelaide Street Circuit On Last Day Of Clipsal 500

22/3/2004 6:20 (Press Release) - The Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon of Steven Ellery was added to the list of victims caught out by the infamous Adelaide Street Circuit at round one of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship at the Clipsal 500 today.

Like many other V8 Supecar drivers, Ellery saw his race aspirations vanish at turn eight of the Adelaide Circuit. Today was the second time Ellery has hit the barrier at the corner with a similar event occurring last year when he spun on another competitor’s oil.

“Today’s accident saw the rear end of the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon hit the concrete wall and as a result the watts link was broken,” Ellery said.

“There is no margin for error whatsoever on that turn and unfortunately I stepped the fine line of getting it right and getting it wrong. The Adelaide circuit is challenging and tough on competitors and cars, which is a reason why so many people didn’t get the start to championship they wanted.”

The Super Cheap Auto Racing team tried to repair the damage but it was so serve it could not be fixed in the time needed to ensure Ellery completed 75 percent of the race and be declared a finisher.

“The Super Cheap Auto Racing team put in a great effort to try and repair the car but unfortunately even with the safety car period we couldn’t do it. There are only a certain number of laps you can go down and still finish the race and we exceeded that boundary,” Ellery commented

Ellery was philosophical about the weekend, stating earlier results in practice and qualifying symbolised the Super Cheap Auto Racing team’s ability to be on the pace with the rest of the V8 Supercar field.

“The Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon was fast in practice and qualifying which is encouraging at the start of the championship,” Ellery stated.

Not finishing both legs of the Clipsal 500 has meant that Ellery and the Super Cheap Auto Racing team finish round one of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship with no points.

“Having no points for the round not only hurts now, but will continue to hurt for the rest of the year. I know the Super Cheap Auto Racing team can come back from this and next round I will use the pace displayed early in the weekend to achieve results,” Ellery concluded.

Next round of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship is at Eastern Creek in New South Wales on the 2 to 4 April 2004.
