Youlden Second In Championship

20/3/2004 20:20 (Press Release) - A fifth overall result at round two of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship has ensured that Super Cheap Auto Racing driver, Luke Youlden is second in the series following the final race at the Clipsal 500 today.

Youlden who was leading the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship, now needs 12 points to equal new series leader Matthew White who is first on 343 points.

“To still be second in the championship when I didn’t have the best weekend is a good result for the Super Cheap Auto Racing team. Although it is a small step backwards from first there is certainly enough time and drive within myself to go out next round and continue to make progress,” Youlden said.

“I was happy with my driving over the weekend and feel as though I am starting to get into a smooth rhythm and will keep striving towards my benchmark of winning the championship.”

Youlden admits the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon did not get the same scintillating start as yesterday and as a result the 26 year old spent the rest of the race trying to avoid sustaining damage.

“I didn’t get the best start and as a result I spent a lot of the race trying to avoid everybody’s accidents. At one stage the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon was almost struck into the fence. At the conclusion of the event the car has no major damage which is always good,” Youlden commented.

Today’s second position in the championship is a contrast for Youlden who last year did not score enough points at Adelaide to impact his overall place in the 2003 Konica Minolta Championship.

“At this round last year I failed to score championship points and as a result it was really hard to secure the series goal which I had set myself at the start of the year,” Youlden commented.

“This year it is a different story and from now on I can focus my drive on getting more points to win rather than making up positions.”

Next round of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship will be at Winton Motor Raceway on the 17 and 18 April 2004 and will mark the halfway point of the six round series.
