White Leads Konica Minolta Championship
20/3/2004 20:18 (Press Release) -
Matthew White, driver of the #28 Gulf Western Oil/Jayco Falcon, has secured his position at the top of the Konica Minolta V8 Supercar ladder after finishing in second place in race two at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.
Placed second in today's and third in yesterday's race saw a mammoth 183 points added to White's Championship total, putting him at the top of the ladder at the end of round two.
“ Having a 12 point lead on the ladder this early on in the series is reassuring, but the Championship is far from won ” said an un-complacent White “ There are still five or six drivers who are strong podium contenders in each round. ”
In what was an uneventful race at the front of the pack, White maintained his position in in third place, before using a braking manoeuvre on the back straight on lap eight, to move into second place ahead of Cameron McLean.
“ Being clear from the pack meant that I could focus on driving and not on avoiding the other cars and accidents on the track. Starting from the front of the grid allowed me to come out onto the track strong and hold my podium finish ” continued White.
“ Having an accident free race one meant that we could get a good night rest, helping our mental preparation for today's race. ”
“ The Gulf Western Oil/Jayco Falcon is performing exceptionally well. Following round one at Wakefield, the (Matthew White Motorsport) team pulled together and brought the car right up to speed ” White said. “ There were some small issues today with the brakes fading later on in the race, but we'll have that more than fixed before the next round at Winton. ”
“ The switch to Ford has shown some great results for the team. Since making the switch , we have been on the podium at every round. Keeping on the podium is what is going to win us this Championship. Strong and consistent performances is what's required ” concluded White.
Round three of the 2004 Konica Minolta Championship get s underway at the Winton Motor Raceway near Benalla, Victoria on the 17 th &18 th of April 2004.
