Ellery Opens Championship In Top Eight
20/3/2004 7:54 (Press Release) -
Steven Ellery has been a standout performer at qualifying for round one of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship with the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon to start the first race of the Clipsal 500 in eighth position tomorrow.
Ellery caught everybody’s attention earlier today when the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon consistently rocketed into the top five in both practice sessions. Ellery then secured a start in the top ten shoot out by qualifying sixth and claimed a position on the fourth row against the highly competitive field.
“It is just great to start the year in a strong position, while tomorrow is going to be a tough race, I will be working with the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon to power through and continue the momentum on the sturdy position achieved today,” Ellery said.
“Practice and qualifying were essential to our success in the shoot out and I was happy with my lap time. The car still has more and the Super Cheap Auto Racing team will be working hard tomorrow to make a forceful start to the year.”
Ellery will be on his guard tomorrow as Australia’s premier motorsport category does battle for championship points for the first time in 2004.
“Everybody will be working to get their championship off to the best possible start. But there are a lot of boundaries that come into play at the Clipsal 500 and only those who work within those limits will be successful,” Ellery commented.
“Anybody who finishes in the top 10 tomorrow will need to be in the best physical condition possible and they must also have the knack of navigating around this challenging track while keeping the car straight.”
“There will be a lot of drivers trying to get through the pack tomorrow but I will be aiming to hold my own while driving my race and to finish in the best position I can.”
Like many competitors in the V8 Supercar category, Ellery has expanded his training schedule over summer and has the full support of a hard working team, something which will provide benefits in tomorrow and Saturday’s race.
“I am as serious as ever this year. We have built some good foundations within the team over the off season and retained and secured some really good staff. I have reviewed my physical training routine and I am the fittest I have ever been,” Ellery stated.
“There is a strong sense of commitment and determination within the team and we are all giving our best to ensure we can finish the year where we started.”
The official start of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship commences tomorrow with a 78 lap race around the streets of Adelaide at 2pm.
