R1 LITES RACE 1, 2 & 3 - Canto begins Konica Lites with a bang
26/3/2000 22:04 (Press Release) - Sunday AVESCO Chief Executive Officer Wayne Cattach said fans were treated to spectacular racing action during the three closely contested V8 Supercar races.
“There was plenty of competition among the drivers with little more than a second separating the top five cars at any one time. It was great day of racing for both the drivers and the fans,” he said.
The top four point scorers from today’s round will be given the opportunity to compete at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide from April 7 - 9.
“There are many promising young drivers among the field who now have their eyes firmly set on making their mark at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide for round three of the Shell Championship Series,” Mr Cattach said.
Kmart sponsored driver Ryan McLeod started on pole in race one to eventually finish fourth, making a great comeback by winning race two and finishing second in race three, bringing him to second in points for the round.
Un-sponsored Matthew White made a fantastic debut in the ex Perkins and Ingall Bathurst winning Commodore VS to finish third overall.
During race one Wayne Wakefield charged to the lead from fifth position to snatch victory in the action packed race slipping to sixth place and a faulty power steering hose in race two stopped the charge for a top four position.
Craig Harris spun off on the opening lap of the first race and was unavoidably hit by Chris Butler. Later Harris crashed at approximately 200km per hour damaging his car and eliminating him for the remainder of the round.
V8 Supercar fans can expect exciting racing at round two of the Konica V8 Lites at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit on 6-7 May.
