Youlden Focused On Championship Lead
19/3/2004 16:55 (Press Release) -
Super Cheap Auto Racing driver, Luke Youlden will use determination and skill to extend his series lead from grid position eight at round two of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship at the Adelaide Street Circuit tomorrow.
Youlden is currently equal first in the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship with Alan Gurr.
After holding provisional fourth and fifth in today’s two practice sessions, Youlden spent a lot of his qualifying track time in traffic and was unable to capitalise on the speed displayed earlier.
“I got caught in traffic and was unable to get a clear track and record fast and consistent laps,” Youlden said, “by the time I got out on my own it was just too late and there was only minutes left on the clock.”
“The Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon was fantastic this morning and personally I felt great. The second practice session was so close and the top ten was separated by only one second.”
“There is no doubt that tomorrow’s racing will be close. The field was within a shout of each other today and the Clipsal 500 is an event which is famous for action packed racing.”
Earlier in the week, Youlden made known his championship aspirations and the necessity of the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon to finish the weekend still in the series lead. The 26 year old is prepared to risk weaving through the field and challenge drivers for positions in order to claim more points.
“It’s not impossible to finish the weekend in a strong position, starting from row four means I will have use more focused aggression to get through the pack quickly and cleanly,” Youlden commented.
“Qualifying after last round looked even more dismal than today and yet we still made it to first from 14th so, nothing is impossible.”
“There is no space for error this event. The track is challenging and the littlest slip in concentration hurts. Championship points are based your position in two races rather than three like other rounds. I need to be consistent in both races to ensure I claim valuable series points.”
Not only will tomorrow’s 24 lap race be at the largest motorsport event in Australia, but additional excitement will be generated with the race being conducted at twilight.
Race one commences at 6.35pm tomorrow, with the final at 9.45am Saturday.
