BigPond V8 Supercars Mobile Media Centre Sets the Pace

18/3/2004 19:51 (Press Release) - Australia’s leading Internet service provider BigPond today unveiled the BigPond V8 Supercars mobile media centre – a satellite-linked mobile media centre that will follow the series around Australia and New Zealand.

The BigPond mobile media centre – boasting advanced satellite broadband communications available in Australia – is a 40-tonne, 25-metre, B-double transporter that will house 21 members of the media at all Australian and New Zealand rounds of the V8 Supercar Championship Series.

At each round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series the rear or “B” trailer will expand from its normal width of 2.4 metres to 5.4 metres providing the media with state-of-the-art working facilities. The “A” trailer will also expand and operate as a boardroom and meeting area for V8 Supercar officials.

BigPond Managing Director, Justin Milne, said the BigPond mobile media centre demonstrated the benefits of cutting-edge broadband and satellite communications technology and reflected BigPond’s commitment to the V8 Supercar championship and its fans.

“Not only is it arguably the best looking rig on the road, it’s a technological package that complements the professionalism and popularity of the V8 Supercars series,” he said.

AVESCO Chairman Tony Cochrane said today “The BigPond mobile media centre will make it easier for journalists to keep fans up to date on the performance of their favourite drivers and teams.”

“Without a strategic partner like BigPond and its outstanding broadband products this state-of-the-art facility would not be possible.

“The new mobile media centre is possibly a first for motorsport and will assist us to showcase the worlds’ greatest Touring Car Championship via BigPond’s amazing technology,” Mr Cochrane said.

Journalists based in the BigPond mobile media centre will be provided with satellite broadband for fast transfer of V8 news reporting. BigPond also will provide a dedicated technician at every round to assist journalists and commentators working in the mobile media centre.

Background

At the heart of the BigPond mobile media centre is technology not yet commercially available in Australia - an automated self-pointing satellite dish and a unique satellite modem

Justin Milne said “Once the transporter is in position, and with the flick of a switch, the satellite dish will automatically unfold and align itself with the satellite.

“In conjunction with the self pointing dish BigPond will introduce a new satellite modem which will provide a self hosting ethernet solution to run on any operating system,” Mr Milne said.

“This modem will make networking of the BigPond Satellite service to multiple users in the BigPond mobile media centre Media Centre extremely simple, all they have to do is plug in their computers and they are on-line. There is no need for anyone to run any special software,” he said.

Other technology featured in the BigPond mobile media centre includes:

• full climate control
• swipe card security access
• two 50 inch Plasma screens and four 30 inch LCD screens provided by Sony Entertainment, V8 Supercars’ official supplier of audio visual equipment
• Two laser printers, a fax machine and photocopier facilities

In addition to the technology supplied to run the mobile media centre BigPond provides extra technology at V8 Supercar events including satellite broadband and additional mobile base stations in an effort to ensure Telstra mobile customers do not experience any connectivity or congestion problems at V8 Supercar events.

The BigPond V8 Supercars mobile media centre will be hauled around Australia by a KW104 prime mover supplied by Kenworth.
