Konica to support the next Lowndes, Bright or Webber

25/3/2000 18:48 (Jason Whittaker) - One of the worst-kept secrets in V8 Supercar circles was official revealed today, with Photographics giant Konica signing-on as principal, naming rights sponsor of the new V8 Lites Series.

Designed as a "feeder" category to the Supercar class, the five-round Lites Series was official launched yesterday at Eastern Creek Raceway, host of Round 1 of the Championship, this weekend.

Speaking at the launch, National Marketing and Sales Manager of Konica Australia, Geoff Davey, spoke of the fantastic opportunity the series provided for young, up-and-coming talent.

"The Konica V8 Lites series may well provide the first break for our next Craig Lowndes, Jason Bright or Mark Webber, and Konica Australia will be very proud to have played a part in discovering a new champion," Davey said.

"Sponsorship of the V8 Lites series was the next logical step in Konica's relationship with motorsport, which has spanned more than five years, and recognises the growing professionalism and popularity of V8 racing In Australia."

"The V8 Supercar series had a total television audience of more than 7 million people in last year and thousands more saw the racing live at the track. The growing army of V8 race fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival, of new drivers and cars in the Konica V8 Lites series."

The AVESCO-Konica partnership will extend until the year 2003.

"We trust the Konica V8 Lites, series will provide fans with all the thrills and spills of V8 motor racing and we wish all the teams a safe and successful season," Davey said.
