WPS Racing Puts Safety First
18/3/2004 19:48 (Press Release) -
WRIGHT Patton Shakespeare Financial Services Group will be fielding an extra two cars in the first round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series in Adelaide this weekend.
The Sydney-based company headed by businessman Craig Gore is the sponsor of the WPS Racing team that will be make its series debut in the Clipsal 500 in a Ford Falcon piloted by driver David Besnard.
While WPS Racing is looking for a good first-up result from Besnard, it is hoping its other two cars won’t spend too much time at the front of the field.
WPS has emerged as the official sponsor of the two Audi RS6 twin turbo V8 Safety Cars that take to the head of the V8 Supercar fields in both the Supercar Championship Series and the Konica Minolta Series should there be any incidents during the races.
“The WPS Audi Safety Cars are a neat fit for a financial services company such as Wright Patton Shakespeare as safety is a primary consideration when investing,” said Mr Gore.
“Our sponsorship of the cars also demonstrates our level of commitment to the V8 Supercar Championship Series.
“We are not just another team looking to perform on the track.
“We have great confidence in the business of V8 Supercars and the sponsorship of the safety car program is one way of demonstrating our long-term support for the series operator, AVESCO.”
A range of off-track vehicle safety promotions using the WPS Safety Cars are also being planned throughout the year.
WPS Racing was formed in February and the 2004 series is the team’s first season in the sport.
Mr Gore has made a $10 million, three-year commitment to run a two-car team in the championship series.
The second WPS Racing car is currently being built and is expected to be on the track by the middle of the year.
WPS drivers David Besnard and Mark Noske are expected to drive in alternate rounds of the series until the second car is ready.
Noske test drove the first car during the V8 Supercar support races at the Melbourne Formula One Grand Prix earlier this month.
Besnard has subsequently trialled in the car and will have his first official drive for the season in the Clipsal 500.
