Youlden Aiming To Extend Lead At Clipsal 500
16/3/2004 5:30 (Press Release) -
After a miraculous come back at opening of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship, Super Cheap Auto Racing driver, Luke Youlden wants to walk away in the outright lead following round two of the series at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.
After qualifying 14th at round one of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship, Youlden drove consistently in the three races at Wakefield Park and is currently equal first in the series point score with V8 Supercar rookie Alan Gurr.
“We proved last round that the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon has the package to finish races in a strong position,” Youlden said, “I worked hard last round and if one thing is for certain I will not be letting go of the series lead without a fight.”
Youlden is carving a name for himself in motorsport circles after driving with fellow Super Cheap Auto Racing driver, Steven Ellery to podium positions at the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000.
“I got a taste for the main game last year through my driving duties with Steven [Ellery] and it is certainly a long term goal of mine to drive in the V8 Supercar Championship in the future,” Youlden commented.
“One way to cement my place in Australian motorsport is by winning the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship, which is another reason why a strong position at Adelaide is critical to my long term aspirations.”
“The drivers in this year’s championship are some of the strongest to date and staying in the lead at Adelaide is going to be a pretty tough task, but I believe in the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon and the team and know we will be giving it our best shot during the weekend.”
Last year, Youlden was unlucky not to finish the support program of the Clipsal 500 with gearbox problems sideling the youngster from Melbourne.
“I learnt last year that one disastrous race at the start of the championship can put you on the back foot for the rest of the year,” Youlden stated.
“In the short time I was on the track at Adelaide I learnt the circuit is very unforgiving and a number of drivers came out second best in some of the challenging sections.”
“As long as I stay focused on the job, drive another consistent race and make the most of every passing opportunity, there is no reason why the Super Cheap Auto Racing team cannot leave Adelaide still in the championship lead.”
Youlden will be signing autographs for the public at the Rundle Mall in Adelaide on Wednesday 17 March at 1.00 – 2.00pm before hitting the Adelaide circuit the following day for practice and qualifying.
