Wayne Wakefield Joins Peters Motorsport
16/3/2004 5:19 (Press Release) -
Peters Motorsport has today announced major changes within its driver line-up for the remainder of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Series. With Brett Peters calling an end to driving duties due to business commitments and Round 2 of the Konica Minolta Series on this week, the team has moved fast to secure the services of Brisbane’s Wayne Wakefield, a move sure to please his many fans and all of the Peters Motorsport sponsors and supporters.
Brett Peters originally teamed up with Rod Dawson in 2001 and dominated the GTP scene with Australian Championship wins in 2001 and 2002. The Radspeed team moved with Brett into V8 Supercars where an impressive 4th place resulted in last year’s Konica season.
Brett commented today on hanging up the helmet, “The last three years have been an absolute blast. I have had fun and loved the results, however I am fully focused on the success of our expanding business” (referring to his new Peters Camera House store north of Brisbane).
“The future direction of the team now requires a driver who eats, sleeps and breathes racing V8 Supercars. Wayne is a great driver and will really give the team a boost in fulfilling its goals over the next 2 seasons. Even though he has missed one round, I am sure he will have an immediate impact this weekend at Adelaide’s Clipsal 500, expect to see some fireworks!” Brett added.
Wayne Wakefield brings a wealth of experience to Peters Motorsport. The hard-charging Queenslander has driven for a number of top V8 Supercar teams in the last few seasons, namely Stone Brothers Racing, Paul Morris Motorsport and most recently Team Dynamik at last years Sandown 500. Also having competed in previous Konica Seasons and winning the Bathurst support race of 2001, Wayne is more than aware of the challenges that lie ahead for the rest of the Championship.
On his sudden call up Wayne said, “Rod has invested in some great equipment this year and together with the support of Greenfield Mowers and Century Batteries, I’m sure I can deliver results equal to what they have been enjoying over the last three years”.
“We had a great test day last Tuesday, found some great speed, so I expect to go and ruffle some level one backed teams throughout the remainder of the series. I have some unfinished business in Supercars” Wayne added.
When asked about the changes, Team Boss Rod Dawson was upbeat about their chances. “Whilst Brett’s decision has come suddenly, I know he is taking the best direction for his family, his business and the great team of sponsors and supporters of Peters Motorsport. I am sure Wayne will continue on where Brett has left off, the team are pumped and our competitors better watch out.”
Wayne Wakefield has also secured and announced Allan Percival as his Business Manager. With exciting developments taking place in 2004, the team are ready to start the charge at Round 2 of the Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Series at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide from March 18-21, 2004.
