Ellery Breaks Through Pack At V8 Supercar Warm Up

8/3/2004 2:19 (Press Release) - Super Cheap Auto Racing driver, Steven Ellery has forced his way into ninth position in race three of the Netspace V8 Supercar Showdown at the Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne today.

After driving consistently all weekend, Ellery waited until the final stages of today’s 10 lap race to overtake Russell Ingall and Craig Lowndes to claim ninth place.

“We worked hard all weekend and the car has improved every race,” Ellery said.

“Today’s race we were more competitive than we have been all weekend and to finish ninth is a big improvement on a qualifying position of 14th.”

“To get two top 10 results over the weekend is a great achievement and puts us in a confident frame of mind for Adelaide in a couple of weeks time.”

After qualifying in 14th on Thursday, Ellery drove each race of the V8 Supercar program consistently and at the end of the weekend was in a strong position to be placed ninth.

“We proved that the consistency is all that counts at the end of the day.”

“After qualifying I thought that a top ten position was going to be a hard task to complete. But we just kept chipping away at it and improving our position each race and in the end we got there.”

“It’s really nice to go away from the event on a positive note.”

Ellery notes that although the Netspace V8 Supercar Showdown was a non-competitive event, it is still a race which many drivers aspire to winning.

“There aren’t too many events like Albert Park where the V8 Supercars perform in front of so many people. The support races at the Grand Prix are something which every driver in the V8 paddock aims to win, for nothing other than their ego,” Ellery commented.

The Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon was one of few cars to walk away from the Australian Grand Prix support races with little panel damage.

“There are a few cars which will need a lot of work before the first round of the championship in a couple of weeks. But the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon is still straight which means the guys can put more attention into making sure we are ready to compete in two weeks time rather than fixing the car.”

The first round of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship is the Clipsal 500 at Adelaide on the 18 – 21 March 2004.
