Ellery Unruffled By Field at Melbourne
5/3/2004 20:48 (Press Release) -
Super Cheap Auto Racing driver, Steven Ellery once again proved that consistency is the key by finishing race one of the Netspace V8 Supercar Showdown in 12th position at Melbourne this afternoon.
Many of the big names of Australian motorsport cracked under the hype that surrounded today’s racing action at the Albert Park Circuit but Ellery kept his cool and avoided unnecessary off-track excursions.
“The Grand Prix is an event which is famous for drivers getting a little bit hot headed and caught up in the fact that it is the first event of the year,” Ellery said.
“It was always my plan to go out there and drive my own race and let everything in the rest of the field settle itself out.”
“At the end of the day, there are no championship points being awarded at this event and the Super Cheap Auto Racing team’s main concern is making sure the car is straight for Adelaide in a couple of weeks time.”
From the start of the race, Ellery made an attack on the field and by the end of the first lap he was placed 13th on track.
“I was little bit disappointed yesterday to qualify 14th, so I was determined to put in a good race today and learn as much as possible about the car for the rest of the year,” Ellery said.
“I got a pretty good first lap in and managed to make up one position. From then I just keep trying to put out good lap times and keep the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon out of the carnage.”
In the final stages of the race and with fading brakes and rear tyres, Ellery tried to hold out Cameron McConville but to no avail with the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon overtaken on the last lap.
“I was driving the car as hard as I could but the rear tyres were gone and there was nothing I could do to keep McConville out. But we’re going to get onto the problem tonight and hopefully sort it out for tomorrow’s longer race,” Ellery added.
Tomorrow the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon will take to the grid at 4pm for a 19 lap, 100 kilometre race before the event decider on Sunday morning.
