New Track To Rev Up Racing At Barbagallo
5/3/2004 20:40 (Press Release) -
Motor racing fans can expect to see their beloved Holden's and Ford's fly around the Barbagallo Raceway circuit even faster this year, thanks to the recent instalment of a new track surface.
The Gallop Government, through the Community Sport Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF), contributed more than $200,000 towards the project, which will increase lap times and provide more exciting races.
The WA Sporting Car Club also contributed a similar amount.
Minister for Sport and Recreation Bob Kucera said the new track would make the Barbagallo circuit, recognised as one of the best in the Southern Hemisphere, even better.
“Although well renowned for its excellent vantage points and quality facilities, in recent years the track has lacked the necessary grip to produce racing at its fastest,” Mr Kucera said.
“As wear and tear has increased, the slippery nature of the track has resulted in an increased level of incidents and safety car interventions, particularly when it rained.
“This is a major reason why the race lap record for the V8 Supercars has stood since 1996.”
Mr Kucera said the new surface, which will be ready for the 2004 season, would be smoother, safer and afford all competitors with a higher level of grip.
“This means that fans can expect to see faster times and a more comprehensive test of engine power,” he said.
Mr Kucera said the Barbagallo Raceway had become the showcase of Western Australian motor sport and was extremely popular with fans.
“The V8 Supercar Championship Series-the VB300 has attracted an annual crowd in excess of 50,000 people since 1973,” Mr Kucera said.
“The high class facilities at the track have also been a catalyst for an increase in membership at the WA Sporting Car Club.”
