Youlden Set To Continue Strong Form With Revamped Super Cheap Auto Racing

16/2/2004 15:16 (Press Release) - Hot from podium finishes at Sandown and Bathurst last year, Super Cheap Auto Racing driver, Luke Youlden is looking forward to a successful year in the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship under newly appointed Team Manager, John McLean.

Round one of the 2004 Konica Minolta Championship gets underway at Wakefield Park on the 21 - 22 February and will mark the first time the pair have worked together. It will also be McLean's first event in charge of 2003's standout V8 Supercar team, Super Cheap Auto Racing.

McLean joined the team earlier this year and will over see operations of Super Cheap Auto Racing in both the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship and Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship. The team is hoping to build on the amazing success achieved at the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000 in the latter part of last year.

"I'm pretty keen to get started, a new team poses new challenges. I feel we've got a great little team here at Super Cheap Auto Racing and I hope to help carry things forward this year," McLean said.

"Although I have never worked with Luke [Youlden] before, I am looking forward to assisting him and Steven [Ellery] to continue where they left off last year. 2004 is shaping up to be a promising year."

McLean has many years experience in motorsport, holding Team Manager positions with various Super Touring and V8 Supercar teams since the 1980's. His most recent appointment was with Briggs Motorsport/Triple Eight Racing.

For now, both McLean and Youlden are focused on producing the best result possible in the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship. Youlden set to achieve this by drawing on the experience he gained from his first full season of V8 Supercar racing last year.

"I am feeling a lot more confident than I did at the start of last year. We had some bad luck early in the season and a gearbox problem at Adelaide cost us a valuable points and a higher position in the championship," Youlden said.

"I have also gained a lot more experience through my co-driver duties with Super Cheap Auto Racing in the endurance races and feel I have a shot at a good position in the [Konica Minolta V8 Supercar] Championship."

Located just 10 kilometres from Goulburn in the New South Wales Southern Tablelands, Wakefield Park is one of Australia's best country circuits, producing some exciting racing for V8 Supercar fans in previous years.

"I really like Wakefield Park as a track. Although it's little, it seems fast and offers good passing opportunities. I just hope the weather is kinder to us this year. I think it rained whenever the V8 Supercars went out last year. I am really looking forward to getting out there on a dry track," Youlden concluded.

The Super Cheap Auto Racing team is currently putting the finishing touches to both car #31 and #30 for the official launch of the 2004 livery this Tuesday 17 February at Super Cheap Auto headquarters.
